jetc.dev Newsletter Issue #334

Published: 2026-10-06

This week, we take our Compose for Web apps offline and try to be more judicious about our use of FLAG_SECURE. Plus, we see an FFmpeg-based multiplatform player library and a node editor (for flow diagrams, etc.).

Note that I will not be publishing next week; the next issue will be in two weeks’ time.

Composable Commentary

Posts, videos, and other new information related to Jetpack Compose!

Offline Support for Compose Multiplatform Web Apps

JetBrains’ Konstantin Tskhovrebov (Mastodon) demonstrates how to set up a service worker to allow a Compose for Web app to work offline. Konstantin also points out something that I had missed: Room3 supports Compose for Web, courtesy of WebWorkerSQLiteDriver.

Medium: Stop Blindly Using FLAG_SECURE in Jetpack Compose: Do This Instead

Medium user Supsabhi points out that a simple application of FLAG_SECURE in a Compose for Android app will block everything from screenshots, which may harm the user experience. Supsabhi shows a few more targeted alternatives, including employing FLAG_SECURE just for certain composables, using modals with SecureFlagPolicy, and hiding sensitive composables from overviews while still allowing user-triggered screenshots.

Resource Roundup

100% pure code!

GitHub: yuroyami / KitePlayer

GitHub user yuroyami created a Compose Multiplatform media player UI around KiteFFmpeg, a Kotlin Multiplatform wrapper around FFmpeg. KitePlayer supports video and audio, in a wide range of formats, along with support for subtitles, varying playback speeds, gapless playback queues, and more.

GitHub: joaonart / KotlinFlow

João Alves is building a node-based graph editor for Compose for Android, modeled after SwiftFlow. It offers user-directed drag-and-drop for positioning and connecting nodes, along with an auto-layout mechanism.

GitHub: software-mansion / enriched-markdown

The Software Mansion team is building a family of Markdown renderers, including this one for Compose for Android. It supports fenced code blocks, images, tables, admonitions, and more.

Notable Releases

Maps for Compose issued a 9.0.0 major release. This has breaking API changes, courtesy of a migration from depending on android-maps-ktx to depending on android-maps-utils, which changes some packages.

Vortex is out with 0.5.0. This too has breaking changes, mostly tied to migrating to CurrentScreenPredictiveBack.

A Very Particular Set of Skills

Adding Compose capabilities to your coding agents!

Here are a couple of additional skills libraries of possible relevance for Compose Multiplatfom developers:
