jetc.dev Newsletter Issue #338

Published: 2026-11-10

This week, we got fresh RCs for Compose and Compose Material3, so we see what they include!

Also, we look at a Kotlin interpreter and the new AppState libraries. Plus, we play with a Mermaid diagram renderer and with some Google fonts.

Ooooo… What Did We Get?

Reviewing the release notes for the latest Jetpack Compose update!

The Compose alpha and beta BOMs are up to 2026.11.00. The primary Compose artifacts are now at 1.13.0-rc01, suggesting that 1.13.0 might ship in stable form before the end of 2026. Very little seems new past the last beta, other than that Modifier.border honors outline size better.

Compose Material3 is up to 1.5.0-rc01, with a few bug fixes.

Remote Compose is now at 1.0.0-alpha23, with some API cleanup to go along with bug fixes.

Wear Compose is up to 1.8.0-alpha03. You can now have ripples on your watch, change the time of TimeText(), and suppress the status bar.

Glance Adaptive reached 1.0.0-alpha04, also with some API cleanup.

Glance for Wear now sits at 1.0.0-alpha22, with yet more API cleanup, plus extended support for onTouchDown, onTouchUp, and onTouchCancel modifiers.

Nav3 for Compose shipped 1.2.1 and 1.3.0-alpha04. 1.2.1 now requires compileSdk 36 instead of 37, and the new alpha fixes a bug.

AppState StateStore is up to 1.0.0-alpha02, as is AppState Transform. Both contain minor changes.

And, we also got updates to Compose-related libraries:

  • androidx.biometric:biometric-compose:1.4.0-beta01
  • androidx.camera:camera-compose:1.7.0-rc02
  • androidx.camera.viewfinder:viewfinder-compose:1.7.0-rc02
  • androidx.ink:ink-authoring-compose:1.1.0-alpha11
  • androidx.ink:ink-authoring-compose-android:1.1.0-alpha11
  • androidx.ink:ink-brush-compose:1.1.0-alpha11
  • androidx.ink:ink-brush-compose-android:1.1.0-alpha11
  • androidx.ink:ink-geometry-compose:1.1.0-alpha11
  • androidx.ink:ink-geometry-compose-android:1.1.0-alpha11

Build for every screen with the latest Jetpack Compose updates from Android Developer Summit

Google’s Rebecca Gutteridge summarizes the announcements made at the Android Developer Summit 2026, along with recent Compose releases.

Multithreading in Compose Multiplatform Web Apps

Konstantin Tskhovrebov (Mastodon) explains how Kotlin coroutines do not work quite like you might expect in Compose for Web. Konstantin then illustrates a couple of ways to deal with that: manual yield() calls in coroutines and migrating asynchronous logic to Web Workers.

Medium: Jetpack Compose, Instantly: No Compiler, No Build, Just Run

Medium user Engmamoudly discusses Fast Compose, using a custom Kotlin interpreter to help avoid compilation lag during ongoing development work. The objective is to be able to see the composables in real time and to employ them in unusual places, such as embedding them in ordinary HTML-based Web pages.

Medium: A Lambda Recomposition Bug in Jetpack Compose

Konstantin Ponomarev writes about how an upgrade from Kotlin 2.3.21 to Kotlin 2.4 caused recomposition issues, stemming from changes in how stability information was generated and propagated within the code base.

Jetpack AppState: When Premium Ends While Music Is Playing

Arda Kazancı (Bluesky) explores the new Jetpack AppState libraries, showing how a team migrated one facet of an app from a StateFlow-based pipeline to AppState.

Medium: Jetpack AppState Transform: Taking Compose’s Reactive State Beyond the UI

Soumik Bhattacharjee also explores Jetpack AppState, focusing on the Transform library and its support for headless compositions as alternatives to Flow-based solutions.

Resource Roundup

100% pure code!

GitHub: rock3r / maradona

Sebastiano Poggi (Mastodon, Bluesky) created a Mermaid diagram renderer for Compose Multiplatform, supporting Android, iOS, and desktop. It includes support for 23 diagram families, interactive diagrams, customizable theming, and more!

GitHub: composablehorizons / google-fonts

Alex Styl (Bluesky) gives you options for working with Google Fonts from your Compose Multiplatform app, supporting all major targets. This includes compile-time bundled fonts and runtime-downloaded fonts (e.g., for user-selected fonts).

GitHub: composablehorizons / systembars

Alex Styl (Bluesky) also created a Compose Multiplatform library that lets you control the colors of Android/iOS status bar and navigation bar icons.

GitHub: GetStream / webrtc-android

Stream is maintaining a WebRTC library for Android, including support for video rendering components for Compose for Android.
